President's Message May, 2024

LWV friends!

We have been busy! In the past month we’ve been to 6 high school campuses and one college campus; registered 102 voters at Naturalization ceremonies in Round Rock; and held voter education classes at the Williamson County Jail. 6 of us represented our League at the state convention. And many of us have been pollworkers and election judges. I have two more asks of all of you: (1) VOTE (Saturday, May 4, AND Tuesday, May 28); and (2) tell everyone you know about both elections. We have resources on our website and social media (we’re on Facebook and Instagram).

As we prepare for our May 18 annual membership meeting—where the Board will share reports of all of our successes over the past year—I want to remind you that everyone is welcome at the board meeting, but only members will be able vote on our candidate slate and annual budget. If you are unsure about your membership status or want to join or renew in advance of the meeting, please contact our Membership Coordinator, Nan Bulla: Membership@LWVWilco.org

I look forward to seeing many of you at the annual meeting!

Felicia Miyakawa

President, LWV Wilco

At the LWVTX Convention 2024, "Embracing Our Diversity.  Defending Democracy," delegates heard one resounding message:  Despite the loss of DEI protections in many non-profits and institutions, we at the League are championing our diversity and seeking to widen it always.  We need more racial diversity, we need more young people and men, we need input from all the communities  in our area!  We at the League have committed ourselves to empower the voice of the people and we have to meet the challenge of growth in all these sectors in Williamson County.

League leaders from all over the state presented workshops and led discussions on countering election disinformation, Voters Guides, empowering engagement , getting out the vote efforts, building next generation leaders in our Leagues, fundraising, turbocharging the youth vote, and more.  We also attended the Plenary session on Saturday, for the first time as a delegation representing LWVWilco at the state convention!  While there, we received a LWV Superstar League 2024 recognition for our multiple VR events while talking like a pirate (on talk like a pirate day, you know?).

Next LWVTX convention will be in 2026 in Corpus Christie.  Think about becoming a delegate!

Welcome (and Welcome Back) to our New and Renewing Members!

We had 12 new and renewing members in April, 2024.  I think we've broken a record!  We thank all the new and renewing members for your ongoing support to our League as we empower voters and defend democracy!
