Quarterly Newsletter November, 2023

Greetings, LWV Community!

It’s time to vote! The 2023 general election is upon us. Early voting began October 23. If you haven’t voted yet, there’s still time. You can vote early through November 3 OR you can vote on Election Day, November 7. Before you go, make the most of League resources! Our website has links to non-partisan explanations for all of the constitutional amendments and local propositions. Locate the polling place closest to you and see when polling places are open on the Williamson County Elections website.

The latest data reported by KXAN show that Williamson County is ahead of the Texas average when it comes to growing the electorate. I’m confident that our League played a big role in this growth! Between August and October of this year, our VDRs registered over 400 voters, and over 70% of those new voters were registered on college or high school campuses. Our Voters Guide team put in countless hours to prepare, edit, and distribute the voters guide. Our texting team sent out hundreds of texts to first time voters as part of our Get Out The Vote effort.

Our work is only possible because of our incredible volunteers. If you appreciate the work we do, and are not yet volunteering with us, please consider donating some time to us. This month I want to highlight volunteer needs that are especially about our voter registration, education, and turnout efforts:

  • We need more help on the texting team;

  • We need more help with the voters guide, especially with the primaries looming in the near distance;

  • We need more help on the social media/graphics team to get the word out about what we are doing; and

  • We need as many volunteers as possible—VDRS, organizers, event leads—for our voter registration efforts.

If you are interested in any of these, you can sign up here..

Best wishes to you all!

Felicia

Our volunteers came through big time for our Deadline Day Blitz, registering voters at all the Wilco ACC campuses, Temple College in Hutto, and the DPS Center.  Thanks, y'all!  As of late October, we made our Deadline Day goal of bringing our total registered in Wilco this fall to 400 voters!

Our team is trying out new approaches to community outreach and creating alliances with other voter supporters.  We had voter registration tables at Leander high school football games, thanks to the Leander ISD's awesome program to promote the Culture of Voting in the schools and community.  Brenda Chlapek and I met with LISD's Heather Neds to brainstorm more partnership possibilities.  Stay tuned!

We are getting students vote-ready in many places, including the Central Texas Beauty College career day and the GISD's Future Readiness Fair.  Our intrepid VDR's (volunteer deputy registrars) efficiently registered all the eligible seniors at Westwood High's Voter Rally, our annual partnership with the Westwood PTSA.  And we presented First Vote to all the seniors at Florence High School.  Next up for First Vote:  We'll get all the Hutto seniors vote-educated and registered in November, along with our First Vote presentation to the students of Georgetown's Salon Professional Academy.

Thanks to all the voter-advocating volunteers!

Texas Legislature Special Session Fall 2023

Governor Greg Abbott called a third special session of the Texas Legislature which started Monday, October 9. His main stated objectives for the session were passing legislation which provides for education savings accounts funded by taxpayers for K-12 students in Texas; creating laws that criminalize illegal immigration into Texas, imposing prison sentences for migrants who cross the border without authorization; and passing legislation that prohibits Texans from being subject to mandatory employment-related COVID-19 vaccinations.  If the session closes without action on the education savings account issue, the governor will likely call a 4th special session in January.

On October 26, 2023, after a contentious debate,  the Texas House passed legislation which criminalizes unauthorized entry into Texas.  This is an ongoing story. For up to date information, there are several reliable news sources you can check.   Texas Tribune is one such source. Another resource can be found at capitol.texas.gov .  The League of Women Voters of Texas weighs in on government policy that affects the public.  Please go to the News section on the homepage and find Capital Action Reports.  lwvtexas.org .

Open Board Meeting

The next LWVWilco Board Meeting is scheduled for December 13, 2023.  As always, the regular board meetings are open, and since this one is so near a festive holiday or two, we plan to get the business over quickly and get to socializing!  Starts at 6:00 pm at the Round Rock Public Library.
