LWVWilco Newsletter-February , 2024

President’s Note February 1, 2024

Dear LWV Friends!

We are already off to a busy start to 2024 and have many updates and upcoming events to share with you. By the time you read this, Our First Vote team will have been to 3 high schools, just since the beginning of the school year!. We have already welcomed ACC students back to campus with a round of voter registration, and have voter registration events scheduled throughout the county right up through Deadline Day (February 5). Our Voters Guide team has put to bed yet another guide–it should be available online by February 5 (Vote411.org) and in print by the second week of February. We welcomed new and prospective members at a wonderful luncheon held at the home of LWV member Ro Chamberlain (thanks Ro and Linda!). We’ve onboarded many new volunteers. And, we’re finalizing details on a new Jail Voter registration and education program, with work to begin in March in advance of the May municipal elections. Read about these accomplishments and more below.

We’ve also had a transition in our leadership team. In early January, the Board voted in Brenda Chlapek as Interim Treasurer. We thank outgoing Treasurer Leah Nolan for her many years of service to the League. Brenda has a big job in front of her, especially since we are growing so quickly! We are looking for a few members to support her work by joining the Budget committee. This is a limited time commitment, with work starting in February and ending in early April. For more information, please contact Brenda: Treasurer@LWVWilco.org

We couldn’t staff all of these wonderful events and initiatives without you, our wonderful volunteers! Volunteers truly are our lifeblood, and while many of our volunteers work in public-facing capacities (such as in voter registration), we need a lot of help behind the scenes, too! If you haven’t yet found a volunteer niche with us or have a few additional hours to spare, here are a few additional volunteer and leadership opportunities.

  • Budget committee (Feb. 2024-April 2024 only). Contact Brenda (Treasurer@LWVWilco.org).

  • Communications Team: we need help with Social Media, graphics, event photography and videography, and the website. Contact Christine (Communications@LWVWilco.org)

  • Election Protection. Join the statewide non-partisan coalition. We are building a team for the Fall 2024 General election. Training will be provided. See https://protectthevote.net/ or contact Felicia (President@LWVWilco.org).

  • Consider joining our Board! A full list of all positions that will be up for election at our May Membership meeting will be available soon. We have immediate interim openings in Membership (2 positions) and Events / Fundraising. If you are interested, please contact Nan (memberatlarge2@LWVWlco.org). Interim positions are filled by a Board vote.

And finally, please mark your calendars with the following upcoming events:

  • February 14, 10:30-11:30 CST: Celebrate the League’s birthday with LWV members around the country! This is a Facebook live event. Register here.

  • February 15, 6-7:30 PM: “What’s on your ballot” webinar, co-hosted by Jessica Foreman (President, LWV Austin area) and Felicia Miyakawa (President, LWV Williamson County). Pre-registration required. Please share this event in all of your social networks!

  • March 5: PRIMARY ELECTION! Make sure to set aside to vote in the Primary! Early voting begins Feb. 20.

  • SAVE THE DATE: March 20, 6-7:30 PM: LWV Williamson County open Board meeting at 1704 Hart, Georgetown. Everyone is welcome, including non-members. We will have a google meet virtual option, too.

  • April 19-21: LWVTX Convention in Dallas. This year’s convention will be at the Embassy Suites Park Central. We will need to send delegates to the Convention. If you are interested in attending, please contact me (President@lwvwilco.org).

See you all soon!

Felicia Miyakawa

President, LWV Wilco

LWVWilco held a new and prospective member luncheon meeting January 20th at the home of one of our gracious members.  We are happy to report that 9 new members joined that day!  The president kicked off the luncheon by giving an overview of the League and what we do.  Then each coordinator got a chance to let attendees know what volunteer opportunities are available in their area.  A delicious lunch was enjoyed and the best part was a performance by LWVWilco’s very own VOTETTES!  Word on the street is that it was a huge success and some members and attendees have already volunteered for our ongoing projects while others have pursued getting certified as VDRs for Williamson and Travis counties!  If you are wondering where is the love for me, an old reliable member, don’t worry.  We’re planning a luncheon to thank you and hit you up for help in March!

Welcome (and Welcome Back) to our New and Renewing Members!

January was a great month for adding new members!  We thank all the new and renewing members for your ongoing support to our League as we empower voters and defend democracy!

Voter Services started 2024 with a BANG!  We scheduled 17 voter registration events from January 16 through February 5, Voter Registration Deadline Day for the March 2024 Primary Election.  These were separate from the many FirstVote events scheduled in January by our Civics Education Director, Helen Cordes.

On January 16 and 17, our volunteers staffed registration tables at Austin Community College’s Round Rock, San Gabriel, and Cypress Creek campuses.  We obtained 68 total in-person registrations from ACC students and handed out another 16 mail-in registration forms.

Greg and Janice Wallace continued their outreach to our senior citizens in assisted living with a voter education session at The Delaney in Georgetown Village on January 18.  They also helped 2 people complete Ballot by Mail applications and took in 3 voter registrations.

On January 11, President Felicia Miyakawa, Voter Services Director Karen Darby, Grace Thomas, attorney with the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and LWV Wilco’s Member at Large, Nan Bulla, took a tour of the Williamson County Jail in preparation for setting up voter registration and education sessions for eligible incarcerated inmates.  We plan to start these sessions in March so that any inmates who register can vote in the May local election.  Our efforts will include instruction on how to request and complete ballots by mail.

Judi Doyle, Voter Guide Lead, has been working with her team to put together Williamson County’s portion of the Voters Guide that will be published digitally on Vote411.org and also in print.  She needs helpers to distribute the printed Guide on or about February 9!  The local Voters Guide is a joint project of LWV Austin Area and LWV Wilco.

We are pretty well staffed for the rest of our voter registration events through February 5, but even if you didn’t sign up and want to shadow us to see how it’s done, you will find us here:

Jan. 27, Feb. 3: Georgetown Public Library – 402 W. 8th, Georgetown – 12 to 3

Jan, 27, Feb. 3: Liberty Hill Public Library – 355 TX 332 Loop, Liberty Hill – 12 to 3

Feb. 5: Deadline Day at Temple College – 1600 Innovation Blvd., Hutto – 9 to 1

Feb. 5: Deadline Day at Lark & Owl Booksellers – 206 W. 6th, Georgetown – 10 to 3

BONUS:  Helen Cordes, Civics Education Director, also set up a Deadline Day voter registration event at 309 Coffee, 309 South Main, Georgetown, from 8 to 10 a.m.

If none of these events tickle your fancy, stay tuned.  We are working on coordinating volunteers for Election Protection (in person at polls or on the phone) and setting up one or more candidate forums for the fall general election!

Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers, new and seasoned, for stepping up to empower Williamson County voters!
