LWVWilco Newsletter-March, 2024

President’s note, March 1, 2024

Dear LWV Wilco friends,

I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful spring weather! By the time you read this, early voting for the primary election will be nearly over. If you have not yet voted, please make a plan to vote on election day and take a friend or three with you! A couple of weeks ago I joined Jessica Foreman, president of the Austin area League of Women Voters for a discussion called what’s on the ballot. We recorded the session and it is available on YouTube: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Xspu82qHI_0&t=121s  Please feel free to share; we hope it is helpful.

In the meantime, we are already gearing up for the municipal elections in May and potential primary runoff elections on May 28. Our Voter Services team has been working nonstop on the Voters Guide. We also continue to have voter registration and get out the vote events throughout the county. Thank you to each of you who have volunteered your time to these efforts and/or, have been working the polls!

CALL FOR BOARD NOMINATIONS: at our upcoming annual meeting in May (see details below) we will be electing the following LWV Wilco Board officers for the next two years: President, Communications,  Membership, Events / Fundraising, and Member at Large. (We have incumbents in office of President and Communications. The other Board positions are currently open.) We will also elect 3 members to serve on the Nominations committee, which is responsible for finding League Board and leadership candidates for 2025. scope. Please, please, please consider nominating yourself or others for one of these positions. We can only fulfill and expand our programming if we have a full leadership roster.  If you want to nominate someone, please send email to Emily at Secretary@LWVwilco.org. If you need more information about any of these positions, please contact me.

I hope to see you soon at one of our many events!

Felicia Miyakawa
President

March 23, 2024

LWVWilco is people powered and we're gathering to say "Thank You!" on March 23, 2024 at the home of Christine Attoun.  We'll be eating picnic style (uncommonly warm spring weather-don't stop!) grilled hamburgers and all the fixings, potato salad, chips and dip, iced tea, and brownies and cookies for dessert, plus any picnic favorite you may want to bring.  If we're really lucky, we may get The Votettes to entertain us again!

Please let us know you'll be joining us by contacting info@lwvwilco.org.
CHANGE OF DATE FOR NEXT OPEN BOARD MEETING
MARCH 20, 2024

The LWVWilco Board meets on March 20, 2024 at 6:00 pm at Stonehaven Senior Center, 1704 Hart St., Georgetown, Texas.  All are welcome to attend, even non-members. We'll get reports from the various leadership team members and be discussing our upcoming events, including LWVWilco's Annual Meeting May 18th. LWVWILCO FIRST VOTE AND GOTV NEWS

by Helen Cordes

Want to know one of the highest compliments for our First Vote program? It’s when the STUDENTS ask us to come back again soon! We’re happily accustomed to getting enthusiastic endorsements from teachers who have us present about the importance of voting to their high school seniors (and register those who wish). Teachers praise us for being engaging and informative with our students, and we appreciate their feedback. But this last time at Eastview High in Georgetown, STUDENTS also told us they liked what we were doing and wanted more in the future.

Thanks to our presenters and volunteers at the Eastview High First Vote presentations to all the seniors, PLUS a lunchtime registration table with our awesome volunteers going out to the lunching students and talking with them about voting and giving out voting stickers! And before February is over, we will be going to Georgetown High School to present First Vote to all the seniors and we’ll have a GHS lunch table on March 26. Come with us if you like talking about voting with ever-interesting young people!

We’ll be going to other Wilco high schools for First Vote, so PLEASE watch your email for sign-ups so that you can volunteer with us and help get young people started in a lifetime of voting!

And one last bit of voter success: I wanted to try out a GOTV (Get Out The Vote) pop-up while early voting for primaries was going on, so we did one at 309 Coffee in Georgetown. We got lots of people reminded to go vote and we answered many voting questions and had some nice conversations. PLUS 309 gives us free coffee!! Some people told us they’d already registered with us on our previous 309 Coffee table on Feb. 5, the deadline to register to be able to vote in the primaries. These newly registered folks had some voting questions, so I love that we’re registering and following up, too! We may be doing more GOTV popups as the year goes on, so watch your email and our Facebook for opportunities.

PICS: Kathy Starnes and Vicki Simons at 309 with newly registered person; he had several questions which we answered!
