LWVWilco Newsletter- AUGUST, 2024

President’s Note August 1, 2024

Dear LWV Friends,

As we head into August, I hope you all are refreshed and recharged. Election season is upon us and we will be busy! As excitement in the election grows, you will likely see a lot of disinformation and misinformation on social media about the process of voter registration and the election itself. Please counter these with FACTUAL information from LWV. Be 100% sure you have correct information before sharing anything. Helpful resources:

  • LWV Texas website: lwvtexas.org

  • Our website: lwvwilco.org

  • Our Facebook: League of Women Voters Williamson County

  • Our Instagram: @lwv_wilco)

As members, we all need to speak with One Voice, and our voice needs to be non-partisan. In practical terms, that means only the President may speak on behalf of the League, and when you are representing the league in any capacity, you must remain non-partisan. Please feel free to support a party or candidate when you are not working an event with us, just don’t talk about being a LWV member while doing so.

This month I want to draw your attention to 4 initiatives.

  1. August 1 is National Poll Worker Recruitment day! Poll workers are critical to the success of an election. If you have thought about being a poll worker or have questions about being a poll worker, please join us for a brief online meeting to discuss what poll workers do. David Nielsen, former WilCo Elections Dept Field Supervisor, will host the presentation and be available to answer any questions you have about poll workers and elections. Please email webmaster@lwvwilco.org to register for the event. This will be virtual only: meet.google.com/ocj-bomi-fyd

  2. August 1-13 is our summer membership drive. As I write this we have 104 members, the most we’ve ever had! Our goal is to expand our membership by at least 10% this month. Each new member allows us to reach more corners of our community, and ensure that quality non-partisan information and resources get into as many hands as possible. We especially want to reach voters whose first language isn’t English. We challenge each member to bring a new member on board in the next 2 weeks. Please contact Nan for more info (Membership@LWVWilco.org).

  3. Women’s Equality Day is August 26. To celebrate, we’re holding an old-fashioned suffragist HERstory walk through historic Georgetown on August 24, starting at 9:30. (See flyer below.) We’ll have VOTES FOR WOMEN sashes for the first 30 folks, as well as refreshments, and voter registration at the Courthouse square. Please let Helen know if you want to join us: FirstVote@LWVWilco.org).

  4. We will be partnering with the Williamson County Elections office to recruit poll workers and volunteers to help at the office during the busy season. Please stay tuned for calls for volunteers and help us get the information out once it is available.

Phew! Make sure to sleep and drink water! We’re under 100 days until election day and counting down!

Thanks to everyone, all 30+ members, who showed up to our first ever Ice Cream Social!  Old members and new members met at Christine Attoun's home on July 27th to beat the heat with something sweet and cold as we socialized and learned what's coming up with our Wilco League of Women Voters!  Door prizes, raffle items, voting bracelets, cookies, ice cream in many flavors with all the toppings, cake, and a performance by LWVWilco's very own The Votettes made the occasion very special indeed!

"Each One Reach One" is the name of our LWVWilco Summer Membership Drive.  Starting on August 1 and culminating on August 13, each member who recruits a new member should contact Nan Bulla, Membership Director,  at membership@lwvwilco.org.  There will be a prize for each member who recruits someone new and special prizes for those members recruiting more than one new member!  Membership is the lifeblood of our LEAGUE.  Let's continue to strengthen as we empower voters and defend democracy!

-Karen Darby, Voter Services:

We have been delighted with the LWV volunteer's response to our invitation to register voters for numerous events in Williamson County over the last several months!  Together, we've been to colleges, community festivals, libraries, book stores, movie theaters, and our volunteers support First Vote presentations when high schools are in session.  September is shaping up to be our busiest season so far for reaching voters and making sure they're ready to vote on November 5th.
WATCH YOUR EMAILS for multiple invitations (more than 20 events) to offer voter services to our citizens, starting with a Resource Fair on September 4 at Texas State University Round Rock, and including voter registration tables at multiple sites on Tuesday, September 17, NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY!

Thanks so much for your efforts to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy!

Welcome (and Welcome Back) to our New and Renewing Members!

July 2024 was a banner month as our membership increased to a record 105 active members!  We are so grateful for our members who prove every day that democracy is worth supporting!  We thank all the new and renewing members for your ongoing support to our League as we empower voters and defend democracy!
