President's Note - September 1, 2024

Dear LWV Friends,

This past week we have been celebrating Women’s Equality Day, which commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment. On Aug 24, we had a HERstory walk (led by Helen Cordes) in old Georgetown, rousing VOTE chants at the county Courthouse, and lemonade and cookies aplenty. Thanks so much to all of you who joined us and helped us celebrate the power of VOTING! And huge thanks to the volunteers who organized and staffed the event!

September is crunch time. We have events nearly every day, with simultaneous events on multiple days. We are also planning school board candidate forums in October. If you have signed up to volunteer with us, expect a lot of emails from Karen and Helen with volunteer opportunities!

Here are September’s Action Items:

  1. SIGN UP TO BE AN ELECTION WORKER. We are continuing to recruit Poll Workers for Williamson County. We will have over 80 sites on Election Day and will need hundreds of new poll workers. You can work half day or full day, just on election day or early voting plus election day. Lots of options! Sign up here.

  2. JOIN THE ELECTION PROTECTION TEAM. LWV partners with several other organizations to provide non-partisan resources at polling places in case voters have difficulties at the polls. EP volunteers sit outside polling places for specific shifts (you can choose your shifts). Volunteers have resources available for voters who approach with questions, but do not confront voters or poll workers. Because we work with a coalition, everyone who participates needs to go through training, which will be ONLINE and will start in October. The Election Protection team will coordinate all training and scheduling. If you want to go ahead and reserve a spot, you can sign up here.

  3. HELP EVALUATE COUNTY ELECTION WEBSITES. Every year, LWV Texas evaluates the Elections Office websites for all 254 Texas counties and issues ratings to encourage counties that provide clear information for voters. You can do all of this from home in your pajamas, and training is provided. Please consider pitching in! The more volunteers we have, the fewer counties  each volunteer needs to evaluate. Email Dorothy Marchand to sign up: dmarchand@lwvtexas.org

  4. GET READY FOR NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY (Sept. 17). We are planning 11 (!!) simultaneous events at college and tech school campuses, public libraries, and Dell. Sites and times will all be on our website calendar soon.

  5. JOIN THE ADVOCACY TEAM. It’s not too early to be thinking about the next legislative session, which begins in January. Elizabeth MacNamara from LWV Texas is leading planning sessions on the 4th Thursday of every month at noon. We had our first meeting this past week. The next meeting will be Sept. 26, noon. If you wish to join the team, please send email to emacnamara@lwvtexas.org

Eat your veggies and stay hydrated! We got this!

President, LWV Williamson County

Voter Services Notes for September Newsletter

-Karen Darby, Coordinator

LWV Wilco’s VDR volunteers are staffing many voter registration initiatives in September and October.  LWV VDRs will conduct voter registration events in the community, at businesses, colleges, high schools (in conjunction with First Vote presentations), and at a church.  We have put a major focus on National Voter Registration Day, September 17, when we will have eleven VDR tabling events!  Our Senior Outreach team is working to make voter registration and Ballot by Mail materials available to those who reside in independent senior living facilities, and we hope to conduct a voter registration drive at one or more of those locations soon. We will also implement soon a program to reach out to apartment dwellers who may have just moved, making sure that they have access to and information about voter registration. In addition, a team is planning to provide voter registration services at several food pantries in Williamson County.

We don’t just do voter registration, though.  Work continues on Williamson County's portion of the LWV Voters Guide under Judi Doyle's excellent leadership. The Voters Guide provides nonpartisan information about issues and candidates. For the November election, the Guide will have information about races from the President of the U.S. on down to local school board trustee races.  Online, voters will be able to input their address and see what’s on their ballot.  Once they make their choices, they can download the ballot and take it right into the voting booth with them. The Voters Guide will be available in print and online at Vote411.org in early to mid-October.

Many who do VDR work and serve as election clerks are aware that the Williamson County Elections Office (EO) has been understaffed and underfunded for some time.  LWV Wilco volunteers have been assisting the EO by undertaking routine tasks to help them get ready for the upcoming election. LWV Wilco President Felicia Miyakawa has also circulated information for those volunteers who want to serve as poll monitors for the November election through the nonprofit, nonpartisan Election Protection program that is a nationwide initiative. Finally, planning is underway for candidate forums in October for local ISD Board of Trustees elections in Leander ISD and Round Rock ISD.  If you are interested in volunteering to do VDR work or help to empower voters in other ways, contact Karen Darby at voterservices@lwvwilco.org.
