President's Note - October 1, 2024

President’s note October 1, 2024

Dear LWV Friends,

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS! This month we have been putting our mission statement—Empowering Voters, Defending Democracy—to work every day! As I write this note in late September, we have already registered over 500  voters at over 60 events this month. We’ve been to high schools, college campuses, tech and trade schools, libraries,  businesses, jails, theaters, community festivals, independent and assisted living facilities, and more. At each event we not only register voters; we also Get Out The Vote by helping voters make a plan.  Please remind everyone in your network that Oct. 7 is the last day to register to vote -or- make any other changes (like address or name) to your voter registration. I will announce final totals for our registration efforts at our Oct. 9 meeting.

Our volunteers will deliver the printed  Voters Guide throughout the county starting Oct. 12. Vote411.org will hopefully be live just a bit before that, and as soon as we have .pdfs of the guide in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Simple Chinese, we will put them on ourwebsite. In the meantime, pdfs for statewide and federal races are already available on our website.

Here are October’s  Action Items:

  1. SIGN UP TO BE AN ELECTION WORKER. We are continuing to recruit Poll Workers for Williamson County. We will have over 80 sites on Election Day and will need hundreds of new poll workers. You can work half day or full day, just on election day or early voting plus election day. Lots of options! Sign up here.

  2. VOLUNTEER AT THE ELECTIONS OFFICE. They are swamped and need people to help them with a million small tasks. You do not need to be a VDR to help. Can’t stay for a full 3-hour shift? No problem, just do what you can. I will continue to update this sign up through Election Day.

  3. JOIN THE ELECTION PROTECTION TEAM. LWV partners with several other organizations to provide non-partisan resources at polling places in case voters have difficulties at the polls. EP volunteers sit outside polling places for specific shifts (you can choose your shifts). Volunteers have resources available for voters who approach with questions, but do not confront voters or poll workers. Because we work with a coalition, everyone who participates needs to go through training, which will be ONLINE and will start in October. The Election Protection team will coordinate all training and scheduling. If you want to go ahead and reserve a spot, you can sign up here.

  4. JOIN THE ADVOCACY TEAM. It’s not too early to be thinking about the next legislative session, which begins in January. Elisabeth MacNamara from LWV Texas is leading planning sessions on the 4th Thursday of every month at noon. We had our first meeting this past week. The next meeting will be Sept. 26, noon. If you wish to join the team, please send email to emacnamara@lwvtexas.org

Voter Registration and a Movie … at Alamo Drafthouse

By Judi Doyle, VDR

“Is there a way to check to see if I am already registered?”

“I will be moving between now and election day? What do I do?”

“I’m going to the UK for school this fall, but how will I vote?”

“If I register to vote now, how long will I stay registered?”

Answering questions is all in an evening’s work, when you’re registering voters at the Alamo Drafthouse-Lakeline on a Friday or Saturday night. The Alamo Drafthouse has graciously hosted LWV registration efforts in its theater lobbies for years. The Alamo management understands that the community shows up at movie theaters, and wherever the community is, that’s the place to help people prepare to vote. The location at Lakeline is a shared venture between the Austin Area and the Williamson County League. It draws potential voters from both counties because it’s very close to the county line.

And we love volunteering these shifts! There is always something fun going on. We have registered “Pink Ladies” attending a “Grease!” movie party. We chatted with local City Council and school board members who were there for the opening of “Mean Girls.” We even registered the dead–okay, not really the dead, but fans dressed up like weird ghosts for the “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” opening. We got to admire the parade of sparkly costumes on display for Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” and the crowds in pink who showed up for “Barbie.” When the latest Pixar and Disney movies are showing, we get to hand out “Future Voter” stickers as fast as we can tear them off the roll, and get kids excited about voting when they grow up.

And we register voters–lots of them. This year, we have processed over 600 new applications and address changes. We’ve handed out almost 300 mail-in forms. We have distributed hundreds of bookmarks, dozens of Voters Guides, and plenty of ballot-by-mail forms. We answer questions and remind people when early voting starts and when deadlines are coming up. Our awesome volunteers demonstrate that the best VDRs are also the most fun VDRs and the Alamo Drafthouse gig is a great way to spend a Friday or Saturday night.

ASSISTANT TREASURER NEEDED!

Are you a "numbers person" with accounting experience? Would you be interested in assisting the Treasurer with her responsibilities? Currently, we need someone to become familiar with our QuickBooks system, the accounting flow, and review our transactions and reports. This would require very little time each month. For continuity of responsibilities, we hope you can step into the  Treasurer's role temporarily if needed. Ideally, you would be willing to be considered to serve as the Treasurer in the future.

If this is a service position that seems right for you, please get in touch with treasurer Brenda Chlapek at treasurer@lwvwilco.org.

Welcome (and Welcome Back) to our New and Renewing Members!

This month we welcome 18 new and renewing members!  We are truly grateful for your support and hope to provide you many opportunities to get involved in this great work.
